While the effort to replace the Interstate 5 bridge crossing between Portland and Vancouver, Wash., has attracted attention for its multibillion-dollar price tag, it wouldn’t be the most expensive new bridge. A new international bridge crossing could come in at double the Columbia River Crossing’s low-end estimate.

Right now, the Columbia River Crossing project is estimated to cost between $2.6 billion and $3.6 billion. A new crossing in Detroit would cost $5.3 billion.

As reported by the Detroit News, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood supports the effort to build a new publicly owned bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. The Canadian government has offered $550 million to help the project.

The existing Ambassador Bridge is privately owned and its owners want to replace it with another private crossing instead.

Officials with Columbia River Crossing effort are in the midst of a push to build momentum for that project, which has been bogged down with other concerns beyond its cost. Critics have maintained that the project needed more local involvement and analysis.

Oregon and Washington’s governors responded by naming an to review the project. That panel is meeting today in Vancouver and tomorrow in Portland.

The panel will give the governors a final report July 30.
