to improve traveling conditions for autos, bikes and pedestrians along Southeast Division Street between Southeast 10th and 39th avenues got the nod from Portland City Council today.

Division Street sees 15,000 cars a day, and with more retail businesses locating there, it’s only going to get more crowded. The improvements laid out in the plan include pavement restoration, pedestrian crossing improvements, two new bike boxes, bike parking and one mile of stormwater pipe improvements.

Besides the road improvements, the stretch of Division will also get a green street treatment with bio-swales, stormwater planters and street trees.

There are two funding sources available for these projects: $6 million for transportation and street improvements from gas tax, system development charges and federal transportation funds and $7 million from the Bureau of Environmental Services Tabor to River project funds.

Now, the project team will move into the engineering phase of the street plan. Improvements will begin construction in 2011 and will last between 18 and 24 months.
