Nonprofit to take over historic Portland firehouse

A music-focused nonprofit plans to lease the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center, which has been vacant since March.
Portland Parks and Recreation, which owns the building, is in talks with the Ethos Music Center, a nonprofit group focused on music education for kids in low-income communities.
A committee made up of staff and community members chose Ethos over three other groups that applied to occupy the space, including Stumptown Stages, NW Documentary and Community Music Center Inc., according to Beth Sorenson, spokeswoman for Parks and Recreation.
The former Portland firehouse, currently configured as a performance space, was vacated earlier this year by IFCC Inc. due to declining fundraising numbers. Portland City Council on July 14 will decide whether to award a contract for the space to Ethos.
