The 3,940 acres of the Mount St. Helens Wildlife Area is in Cowlitz, Clark, Skamania and Wahkiakum counties, and is managed in 15 units. One of the units totals 2,744 acres and is in Cowlitz County along the North Fork Toutle River, lying just west of and adjacent to the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument.

This project consists of general delivery and placement of wood to improve access to the wildlife area. Work includes purchase, loading and delivery of 600 raw logs from an approved source, off-loading at the project site, and placement of logs at the toe of a floodplain bench.

All logs shall be green-cut Douglas Fir and be delivered to the project site no more than 120 days after being felled. The logs shall be sound, free of decay, a minimum of 40 feet long, a minimum of 10 inches at the small end, and a maximum of 24 inches at the large end.

All work shall be completed by Oct. 6, and any necessary revegetation or seeding of disturbed areas will be completed by Nov. 15. Revegetation or seeding of disturbed areas will be scheduled in cooperation with the engineer to avoid disruption of public use of the area and to avoid hunting seasons.

The estimated project cost is $120,000.
