The Banks-Vernonia State Trail is the first “rails-to-trails” state park in Oregon. It is built on an abandoned railroad bed that stretches approximately 21 miles from Banks to Vernonia. The trail, which has a surface of asphalt and gravel, is 50 minutes from Portland and is accessible from several trailheads. The trail is considered easy to moderate in difficulty, and is open year-round for walking, mountain biking, picnicking and cross-country skiing.

Work includes site preparation, including clearing and grubbing, embankment work, rockery retaining walls, rock base, paving, erosion control and other work. Permanent and removable bollards, benches, signs and trail markers will be furnished by the owner.

The trail is open to the public, and users will continue to travel on it during work, although the owner will post notice that the trail is closed in the area of work during construction.
