The John Day River Bridge is on Oregon Route 207, M.P. 0.46 in Service Creek.

The project consists of removal of bat guano and wooden deck formwork from the bridge box girders, and disposal of the guano and formwork at a DEQ-permitted landfill. Bat guano can pose two risks: excessive weight and disease.

The deck formwork is approximately 1,840 square feet.  The bat guano will be removed from approximately 3,680 square feet of box girder floor space. The guano is one to six inches deep on box girder floors and amounts to traces on box girder walls.

The contractor shall assume that the bat guano contains spores of the Histoplasma Capsulatum fungus and take appropriate measures to to bat guano dust. It is imperative to keep the guano and formwork sufficiently moist to prevent dust generation at all times during removal, handling, storage and transport. The contractor shall equip workers with adequate respiratory protection when disturbing and handling the bat guano.

Final completion will be Nov. 30.
