The Dallas Fire Station, at 915 S.E. Shelton St., was designed to support between 30 and 40 volunteer firefighters when it was built in 1972. Some aesthetic improvements have been made since; however, the station today primarily has the same footprint and functionality. It serves five full-time employees and more than 70 volunteer firefighters.

In addition to serving the city of Dallas, the fire station doubles as the main station for the Southwestern Polk County Rural Fire Protection District, so it’s an essential facility for support of emergency response efforts within the community of Dallas and much of the rural county.

In 1972 the station was compliant to the limited seismic standards incorporated in the building code at that time. In November 2009 a Tier 1 seismic evaluation was completed. Based on the seismicity of the site, the building is considered to be at “high” risk.

This project consists of a request for proposals for professional engineering services to provide final engineering analysis and construction drawings for seismic mitigation issues. The notice of intent to award is scheduled to be issued Oct. 5. Work is anticipated to begin Nov. 8, after city approval and finalization of the contract.
