The Korean Women’s Association was founded in Tacoma, Wash., in 1972 as a social club to ease its members’ culture shock. Today it is a major institution that hosts and administers 22 social services/programs and each month serves more than 10,000 clients of 40 different national backgrounds and languages.

The historic Olympus Hotel, owned by M & M Olympus Hotel Limited Partnership, is at 815 Pacific Ave. in Tacoma. The Korean Women’s Association holds the majority share of the limited partnership and will oversee the renovation. Work will consist of minor rehabilitation and energy efficiency upgrades for common spaces and approximately 49 units that house low-income families.

The Korean Women’s Association requests general contractors, licensed and bonded in the state of Washington, to submit their qualifications and proposals for the project. Up to three of the highest scoring contractors will be selected. Those contractors will then be interviewed by a panel that includes the sponsor, architect and development consultant. The highest scoring contractor will be selected to enter into a preconstruction agreement with the Korean Women’s Association to provide design input, cost estimating, value engineering and to eventually lead an open competitive subcontractor bid process.

It is anticipated that the project will be out for bid in December. Construction is scheduled to start in January 2011 and finish in June 2011.
