Portland’s Bureau of Transportation is making progress on cataloging the need for repairs on its city streets and bridges.

The city department has been unable to generate new reports on Portland’s unmet street maintenance needs since fiscal year 2005-06 because of outdated software. After purchasing new software earlier this year, PBOT spokesman Dan Anderson said his department has completed its inventory of arterial and collector streets north of Burnside Street. Progress has been delayed somewhat by this summer’s wet weather, however, Anderson said.

“We can only survey the streets when it’s dry,” Anderson said. “We hope to have the whole city, minus residential streets, completed by mid-November. Then we can begin analyzing the shape of the streets so we can produce an updated report.”

Though a report won’t be available until late 2010 or early 2011, PBOT is already lining up repair projects for next year and plans to bid those before the end of 2010. In 2011, it will begin analyzing the condition of residential streets, Anderson said.
