McDonald Excavating was named a double winner at the Daily Journal of Commerce’s DMWESB TopProjects event held Thursday evening at the Nines hotel in downtown Portland.

The awards are a spin-off of a similar competition the 91ÊÓƵ holds each year recognizing the top construction projects in Oregon and Southwest Washington. The DMWESB version singled out the work performed by disadvantaged firms, minority- and women-owned firms, and emerging small businesses on projects in Oregon and Southwest Washington during 2009.

In addition to winning the title of Best DMWESB Contractor, McDonald Excavating earned a second-place award in the private buildings category for its work on a yard facility for Hamilton Construction. First place in that category went to Vancouver Paving for the company’s work on the PRODA Radiation Oncology Center.

Carr Construction and Endeavor Plumbing shared third-place honors in the private buildings category. Carr’s award was for its role in turning the Federal Reserve in downtown Portland into office space for several creative firms and companies, including Jive Software. Endeavor was recognized for its plumbing installation work for a KeyBank branch in the Pearl District.

Studio Art Direct won the public buildings category. The company chose and provided art for Happy Valley City Hall; local artists were supported while the city stayed within its budget. Western Rebar placed second in the category for its role in building the TriMet parking garage at Clackamas Town Center.

In the category for public works, transportation and infrastructure projects, Staton Cos. won for work on the McKenzie River to Goshen Interchange on Interstate 5. O’Neill Electric was awarded second place for its work on the Interstate 205 light-rail extension, and R&R General Contractors placed third for work on the Willamette River Morrison Bridge pedestrian-bike access project.

Sign Wizards was named the best DMWESB supplier, and Hillsboro-based Green Art Landscaping was honored as the best DMWESB professional services firm. The Port of Portland received an award as best non-DMWESB mentor.

Judges for the competition were: Dan Graham, president of the Northwest College of Construction; Roy Jay, executive director of the African American Chamber and the Alliance of Minority Chambers; Annie O’Brien, founder of LVD Media and an elected board member of the Asian Pacific American Chamber of Commerce; Maurice Rahming, president of the Oregon chapter of the National Association of Minority Contractors and president of Portland-based company O’Neill Electric; and Dalene Schafer, office and marketing manager of Precision Construction and the 2009-2010 president of the Portland chapter of National Women in Construction.

DMWESB TopProjects’ presenting sponsor was Littler. Gold sponsors were: the Business Diversity Institute, David Evans and Associates, Energy Trust of Oregon, Hamilton Construction, Howard S. Wright Construction Co., James W. Fowler Co., NECA/IBEW, Skanska, Slayden Construction Group and Turner Construction.
