The batteries that power electric vehicles have long been the biggest drawback to more widespread EV adoption. Big, heavy and made from incredibly expensive materials, EV batteries take up a lot of space and cost a lot of money.
But British scientists from the Imperial College of London’s Department of Aeronautics have created a new material that could eliminate the need for a physical battery, according .
The material has two layers of carbon fibers sandwiched around a layer of glass fiber, which is covered with an electricity-conducting resin that creates a charge just like a regular battery. This supercapacitor material could be used in the floorboards, doors or any other part of the car, allowing it to run battery-free. The material can also charge and discharge more quickly than current battery technology and uses no chemical processes, which means it would have a longer lifespan.
Detroit, take note: the cars of the future may not need any batteries at all.
