The Oregon Institute of Technology, in Klamath Falls, is dedicated to researching alternative green power generation. OIT presently utilizes geothermal resources at the campus for direct uses, primarily to heat campus buildings, but also for hot water and limited power generation. OIT has assessed its geothermal resources to maximize green power generation.

In 2009, OIT successfully drilled a deep (5,300 feet) geothermal well to intersect the high-angle, normal fault on the campus’ east side. OIT wants to take advantage of new technology that will maximize the power generation potential of this well.

OIT is seeking proposals for a contractor to provide, deliver and commission a plant to maximize energy production using existing geothermal resources. OIT’s goal is for geothermal well No. 7 to generate at least 4.5 million kilowatt-hours per year of renewable electricity, after considering all ancillary and pumping loads, by May 2012.
