The Portland Japanese Garden has selected Japanese architect Kengo Kuma to design its future expansion. Kuma serves as principal of in Japan and is a professor at the graduate school of architecture at Tokyo University.

In December, Kuma interviewed with the garden’s board of directors to helm the design of the garden’s expansion. In 2007, the garden completed a new master plan in response to an increase in visitors and has been searching for an architect for the past two years to carry out the plan.

The garden’s expansion will build on the work of original designer Takuma Tono, who designed the Washington Park attraction between 1963 and 1967. New buildings designed by Kuma will include a cultural and education center, gift store and tea house.
