We know that the Oregon Coast will be a dangerous place in the case of a tsunami, but what can be done about that? about a Cannon Beach real estate attorney who wants to institute a construction moratorium until more science can be done about the dangers to the area, and local building codes can be updated accordingly.

The attorney’s name is Charles Hillestad, and his particular concerns are about new higher-density developments coming into Cannon Beach. As the Daily Astorian reports:

If an earthquake occurs and a tsunami washes over a densely packed neighborhood, Hillestad believes the houses will collapse and could act as 鈥渃hoke points,鈥� preventing a quick escape.

Local elected officials, architects and planners oppose the moratorium, which they say would harm the area’s economy, and probably wouldn’t make that big of a difference if a disaster did hit. The article does make a good point, however:

State law already prohibits the construction of some facilities in tsunami zones, including most hospitals, fire and police stations, preschools through high schools and colleges with more than 500 students.

If we don’t allow public buildings to be built in these areas, should we allow private ones there?
