In order to begin construction on The James Hawthorne Apartments in downtown Portland, the building first had to be carefully dismantled. Two adjacent apartment buildings, property lines and busy streets surrounded the construction site, leaving almost no room for staging.

鈥淔or the most part, materials didn鈥檛 arrive on-site until the day they were needed,鈥� Kraig O鈥機onnor, project engineer with R&H, said.

Construction began with a 鈥渟oft鈥� demolition 鈥� R&H enlisted the Rebuilding Center to salvage some materials while other materials were sorted offsite for recycling.

R&H teamed with the Housing Authority of Portland, Portland Development Commission, and William Wilson Architects to construct the 5-story transitional-housing project. The 50,000-square-foot building contains 48 single-room units on the upper floors, a commercial kitchen and a dining area for people in Multnomah County鈥檚 Bridgeview Program. A bicycle room and offices for the facility鈥檚 staff are on the ground floor.

The project was completed under budget, on schedule and exceeded MWESB goals.
