Affordability and sustainability were the primary goals in the construction of the Little Deschutes Lodge, an affordable senior housing project in La Pine, Oregon.

The 26-unit Lodge welcomes a community of residents 55 and older who earn up to 60 percent of the local median income. BLRB|GGL Architects designed the twelve-acre property to evoke a familiar and timeless Northwest lodge, using locally harvested logs for several of the project鈥檚 finishes.

The facility also features many energy-efficient practices, including 16,000 feet of looped pipes that extract natural underground heat, a solar panel array that supplies hot water to a centralized boiler and distribution system, and barrels that capture rainwater runoff for re-use in planters and the community garden. Reaching complete, zero-net energy independence is one of the project鈥檚 future goals.

From initial master planning to certificate of occupancy, this partially state-funded project was completed in just 14 months.
