Expectations were high for the construction of the University of Oregon鈥檚 405,000-square-foot Matthew Knight Arena when it replaced the historic McArthur Court.

Project team + Stats

Location: Eugene, Oregon
Cost: $158.5 million
Start Date: February 2009
Completion Date: December 2010
Owner/Developer: University of Oregon
Engineers: Haris Engineering, Henderson Engineers
Architect: TVA Architects
General Contractor: Hoffman Construction Co.

TVA Architects developed 39 design alternates and executed 25 of them throughout construction. Matt Swaim, senior project manager for general contractor Hoffman Construction, said the list of alternates helped maintain a 鈥渂asket of opportunities鈥 while also attaining competitive pricing at an early stage.

In response to the opportunities and constraints of the project site, lead designer Robert Thompson of TVA Architects created a unique, elliptical building form. With energy use projected to be more than 30 percent below code, extensive use of recycled and locally sourced materials, and a construction-waste recycling rate approaching 95 percent, the project is slated to become the first LEED gold arena in the NCAA.

鈥淭o watch the facility functioning with my family on opening night was really one of the pinnacle moments in my career,鈥 Swaim said.
