It wasn鈥檛 easy for the Scappoose community to see the demolition of the historic community school. It took a collaborative effort from the Scappoose School District, P&C Construction, DLR Group and local citizens to come up with a plan that fit the budget, served student needs and paid homage to the building鈥檚 historic roots.

Project team + Stats

Location: Scappoose
Cost: $14.96 million
Start Date: June 2009
Completion Date: July 2010
Owner/Developer: Scappoose School District
Architect: DLR Group
Engineers: DLR Group, MGH Associates
General Contractor: P&C Construction
Other Associates: Cornerstone Management Group

Involvement with local subcontractors and sustainability efforts were the hallmarks of this project for Steve Anderson, P&C鈥檚 project manager.

鈥淲e felt like we found some really high quality firms that we wouldn鈥檛 have found otherwise,鈥 he said.

As far as sustainability efforts, daylight provides 75 percent of the building鈥檚 light, and recycled materials were used for about 50 percent of the school鈥檚 interior finishes. The school also features rainwater harvesting, daylight harvesting, and photovoltaic roof panels and window awnings.

The original school bell was refurbished and placed near the entrance to the new, 67,000-square-foot school.

The new Otto H. H. Peterson Elementary School building was completed within its tight timeline and under budget.
