When a record amount of rain in December 2007 took out the Chandler Road Bridge, residents in several towns along State Route 6 found themselves without a way to cross the Chehalis River.

With Harper Houf Peterson Righellis Inc. providing overall project management, civil engineering, natural resource design and landscape architecture, the project team constructed a new bridge structure that was raised by more than 12 feet in order to provide clearance for future flood events.

Chris Robertson, project-managing engineer for HHPR, said raising the bridge was 鈥渁 technical feat,鈥� especially because the work was so close to the highway and the team was under tight time constraints.

The new bridge uses post-tensioned, spliced, precast girders at 240 feet, which has set a new span record for this type of structure in the western U.S.

鈥淲e knew that as soon as the bridge was built, it would be a massive lift in the lives of all the people in the area,鈥� Robertson said.
