The first phase of the expansion of the Newberg Wastewater Treatment Plant involved the construction of a 1,000-gallons-per-minute triplex submersible wastewater pump station. The station includes a control building, wet well, sewage divisionary structure, pre-cast valve vaults and a standby generator.

The city of Newberg also called for the demolition of an obsolete industrial wastewater pretreatment facility that had been out of service for nearly 15 years. The team from Mortenson Construction demolished the unsightly, unsafe facility at no cost to the city. A total of 92 tons of steel were recycled during the demolition.

The team faced scheduling challenges and unforeseen underground conditions, requiring coordination with utility companies and neighbors. During the installation of underground utilities, the team found several abandoned national gas lines, which were treated as live lines until local companies confirmed otherwise.

Thanks to what Mortenson project manager Aaron Braun calls 鈥渁 great collaborative effort,鈥� the work was completed with no injuries, ahead of schedule and under budget.
