With two functionally obsolete and structurally deficient bridges crossing the Tualatin River, residents of Clackamas County were ready to see bridge construction begin in 2009. Wildish Standard Paving Co. began by constructing temporary detours and work bridges at both the Stafford Road and Borland Road sites.

The new Stafford Road Bridge is 445 feet long, 55 feet wide and crosses the Tualatin River west of the original bridge.

The original design of the Borland Road site required placing large cofferdams and many steel piles in the river. Through a collaborative effort, the project was redesigned to cast-in-place concrete drilled shafts, which greatly reduced both the impact to the river and the cost to Clackamas County.

Recreation on the Tualatin River was one of the major challenges during the project, according to Tim Hendrix of Wildish.

鈥淧eople were going under our construction work all of the time,鈥� Hendrix said. 鈥淲e had to maintain an opening and make sure it was safe.鈥�
