The Oregon Zoo, operated by Metro, is requesting proposals for architectural and engineering services for two projects and provision of on-call services.

The first project, the Cascades beaver marsh aviary and exhibit, was completed in 1982. Some modifications to a couple of pole tops and guy wires were made during an adjacent project in 2006.

In July 2010, the Oregon Zoo hired KPFF to investigate the condition of the cables and top of the poles. This report showed significant rot and splitting of the top of the wood poles and cable tensions which need to be addressed.

In February and March 2011, Carlson Testing completed Resistograph and Boroscope tests to most of the wood poles in the ground. Determinations were that there was minimal rot, if any, and the poles are sound enough for several more years of use.

The estimated construction budget for this project is $325,000 and the estimated completion date is Jan. 31, 2012.

The second project, the Africa lagoon, was built in 1990 to house Spoonbill, Ibis and ducks. The exhibit area is approximately 2,800 square feet and is covered with stainless steel wire mesh. The area also has a shallow pool approximately 700 square feet that is dump-and-fill, a small duiker (antelope) holding barn with a visitor’s pass-through and viewing from the swamp building.

The Oregon Zoo’s intent is to modify this exhibit to hold and display flamingos and other birds. This will require changes to the landscape, pool renovations, additional holding and slight modifications to existing holding facilities.

The estimated construction budget for this project is $175,000, and the estimated date for completion is Feb. 29, 2012.

Metro also anticipates the need for on-call services for additional projects. The contract term will be July 2011 through June 2012, with the option of three one-year extensions at Metro’s discretion.
