Construction will begin this summer on the long-awaited trail connection between Willamette Boulevard and Swan Island. W&H Pacific completed a design for a trail on the bluff at the south end of the University of Portland. A dirt path exists in the same location and a paved trail route will follow. A bridge and staircase will be built to bring trail users over the Union Pacific railroad tracks, and provide easy access to Swan Island. The Waud Bluff Trail also will provide a key neighborhood connection to the future North Portland Greenway trail.
The Waud Bluff Trail project involves the construction of trail, bridge, drainage and roadside development improvements between North Basin Avenue and Willamette Boulevard. Work includes traffic control; erosion control measures; drainage system work, including sewer pipes, manholes and inlets; construction of bridge, stairwell and retaining walls; aggregate base; MHMAC wearing surfaces; concrete curb/island/stairwell/sidewalk; pavement markings and striping; signing; and roadside development, including seeding, planting, fencing and a bike rack.
