A reader snapped this picture of Ira Keller Fountain Park this morning:

Some merry prankster seems to have soaped up one of the city’s fountains. Honestly, this is probably the best-done fountain foaming that we’ve seen… so foamy! And on a sunny day!

However, a call to the water bureau reminded us that such supposedly light-hearted pranks are NOT FUNNY.

鈥淧utting a soap in a public fountain is not a prank,”聽 said water bureau spokesman Tim Hall, “It鈥檚 vandalism that costs the city taxpayer money.

The water bureau has to dump the water and have a maintenance crew clean the fountain. The soap can also damage the fountain鈥檚 mechanisms. Portland has 15 decorative fountains in downtown for the public鈥檚 enjoyment. To damage them is a crime.鈥�
