Lincoln County School District is one of the few districts ramping up construction work after voters passed a $63 million bond measure earlier this year.

Work is under way on nearly a dozen schools, including Toledo Elementary, which received $4.5 million to replace its 11 portable classrooms with a new, brick and mortar addition to the school.

Bob Shindelman doesn’t mince words when he describes the portables, some of them dating back to the 1970s, at Toledo Elementary school.

鈥淭he carpets were worn out, the buildings would shake when you walked in them, and they were drafty in the winter,鈥� said Shindelman, the principal of the school for the last three years. 鈥淥ld portables get musty.鈥�

The portables were finally torn down in June and July.

T. Gerding Construction Company, based out of Corvallis, finished framing the addition early in September, and is expected to deliver the roof trusses in the first week of October. The 10 new classrooms, cafeteria, and school offices will be open in time for the 2012 school year. District-wide construction is expected to continue into 2013, with the hope that most projects will be done in time for the 2013-14 school year.

鈥淭he best part is that we will all be inside one building,鈥� Shindelman said. 鈥淲e’re on the coast out here, so in December it gets pretty cold and wet. We will not miss going outside to get from one portable to another.鈥�
