Located close to future high-density development along Interstate Avenue, the LEED platinum-rated Killingsworth Station is an urban infill mixed-use condominium project for both market-rate and low-income buyers.
Location: Portland
Cost: $10.597 million
Start date: November 2010
Completion date: August 2011
Owner/Developer: Winkler Development Corp.
Architect: Vallaster Corl Architects Inc.
Engineer: Catena Consulting Engineers, MGM Associates
General contractor: R&H Construction
The condos are a mix of one- and two-bedroom units, and the project includes 9,500 square feet of retail space and 47 parking spaces. The city hopes to promote affordable, high-density, transit-oriented living in this area along MAX light-rail tracks.
The orientation of the structure responds to the position of the sun, with west-facing units equipped with sun shades. All condo units feature transom windows above interior light shelves to reflect natural light.
Other sustainable features are central solar hot water systems, green roofs, bike parking on every floor and an electric car charging station. Despite a short time frame for construction and the revision of interior features to make the units more appealing in a competitive condominium market, the project was completed in time for the following sales season.
