Completed using Accelerated Bridge Construction, the team behind the OR 241 Isthmus Slough Approach Bridge project was able to replace an 80-year-old bridge in just 13 days.

Originally constructed in 1931, the bridge had fallen into disrepair and had weight restrictions imposed on it in 2001. Traditional building approaches would have been too expensive and caused delays on this vital connection to Coos Bay, causing the project team and the Oregon Department of Construction to use the accelerated building method.

In fewer than three days, the east approach was demolished and removed. Beam sets were then poured and cured, and deck slabs were placed. On the 10th, 11th and 12th days of the project, slabs were grouted, asphalt was laid and pre-constructed barriers were put into place. By Day 13, the community was able to travel on a new bridge, four days ahead of project completion estimates.

鈥淭he whole reason we do ABC is to get the project done sooner and have less impact on the public,鈥 said Aaron Standeford, project engineer with Hamilton Construction. 鈥淭his bridge is the only way to get across the bay, so the least amount of time was the best thing for the public.鈥

Standeford said the largest project challenge was the pile driving work. While a typical pile would be 24 inches in diameter, the piles for the new bridge were 36 inches in diameter. Crews were able to drive the piles outside of the existing bridge so traffic could get by.

Although the project was on a fast-track timeline, special attention was given to keep runoff and construction debris from entering the water during the accelerated construction process. ODOT has termed this project a successful example of 鈥淎ccelerated Bridge Construction on a budget.鈥
