Redevelopment of the 33-acre Zidell Yards along the South Waterfront may be a few years out yet, but owners aren’t waiting to activate the site.

Zidell is partnering with the Northwest Film Center to host a series of drive-in movies on the waterfront property, Aug. 3 through Aug. 5. It’s an effort to bring life and energy to the area and help build a sense of place, said Matt French, the managing director of ZRZ Realty, the real estate arm of Zidell Cos., in a prepared statement.

Last September, Zidell and ZRZ presented drawings for a master-planned development consisting of 27 buildings and between 3 million and 3.5 million square feet of office, retail and multifamily space. So far, construction has been isolated to The Emery, a seven-story, 118-unit apartment building on Southwest Moody Avenue just south of the Ross Island Bridge. The project is slated to open in September.

The rest of the site consists of small gravel, so movie-goers without a car are advised to bring lawn chairs, air mattresses or blankets. Audio for the films will be broadcast over FM transmitter and via an onsite PA system. General admission is $8 or $12 for a double feature. Tickets will be sold for cash only at the door. No outside food or drink will be allowed but both will be available for purchase, according to the announcement.
