is performing a full renovation on a building at 3011 N. Lombard St. for Green Zebra Grocery, the first location in a chain of small grocery stores primarily selling local fresh foods and healthy prepared foods. The 6,500-square-foot building was originally built as a Safeway store and is being renovated to bring it back to how it looked in the 1950’s while keeping it structurally modern and up to code.

Ceilings have been removed to expose the building’s trusses, which have been rebuilt and reinforced. The store’s kitchen will reuse the building’s old exhaust hood, which is being updated with new fans and air system, as well as an energy management system to save power. The project team is recycling wood reclaimed from the site as furniture in the dining plaza, and are on track for a 98 percent offsite materials recycle rate.

Other work on the site includes a plaza with covered bicycle parking, installation of four bioswales, and extensive landscaping using native plants which require no irrigation. Work on the -designed project began in May, and is slated for completion in late September.
