Neil Kelly Co. was replacing a section of ridge beam on a three-story home, not a project it typically does, so Safety Manager Lisa Pickert and her team developed a special plan. They rented a mobile crane unit and hired an experienced operator, who taught the crew the standard signals used to direct the crane.

鈥淲e had to mark off the property as to where people, including the homeowners, could and could not stand. Ahead of time, we designated each person鈥檚 role during the process and included two observe-only individuals who could call out concerns along the way,鈥� she said. 鈥淚t was a nail-biter, but with preparation and process the job went smoothly.鈥�

Pickert noted that having the right tool for the job is true, even in safety. As a result, the company has purchased several unique tools for its carpenters to use, including a goat ladder, chicken ladder and air sled.

Another piece of equipment that helps the carpenters do their jobs more safely is their 鈥渂ump cap,鈥� a hard, plastic-lined baseball cap. These help protect a worker during a demolition project with a cast iron pipe overhead. 鈥淔ive bumps later, the carpenter was very glad they were wearing the protective head gear. In contrast, another carpenter who wasn鈥檛 wearing any head protection banged right into the cast iron pipe with their forehead,鈥� she said.

Air quality is a big concern, not only for clients and their property but also for job sites and crews working in them. In 2016, Neil Kelly Co. began deploying the BuildClean HEPA Filter at its major construction sites to create dust-free environments with high-performance air filtration technology.

In 2017, Neil Kelly Co. received an award from the National Association of Home Builders: Remodeler Safety Program of the Year.
