P&C Construction鈥檚 safety planning starts before client interviews, giving the company the ability to plan for site logistics on vehicle traffic, pedestrian safety and overall site safety. It also helps guarantee the project is planned and budgeted correctly.

鈥淲hile there are always surprises, there are much fewer now,鈥� said Safety Manager Rick McMurry. 鈥淎nd when they do arise, we are in the best possible position to make sound choices.鈥�

One example is when a P&C crew found more hazardous soil on a project than the survey identified. Its safety plan and the plan it approved for its site-work partner provided clear steps for stopping work. Within 24 hours of the discovery, environmental engineers and testing agents were on site and cleanup was underway.

In 2015, the company saw a spike in emergency medical responses. 鈥淭hat wake-up call forced us to honestly and fearlessly look into every procedure, process and behavior,鈥� McMurry said. 鈥淩ather than presuming that all workers were coming in both well trained and safety conscious, we set a baseline for training not only new workers but also returning workers in our four-hour safety orientation given to all workers, field and office.鈥�

P&C Construction, which received a 2019 AGC Construction Safety Excellence Award, updates its safety program regularly and has a policy of calling OSHA for consultations on every project. In doing so, its consultant found a gap in its process oversight and ability to quickly confirm that compliance needed improvement. Within 48 hours, it had a new cloud-based collaborative system running and all of its project engineers trained in its use.

The company鈥檚 Safety Advisory Council brings together employees from all levels on a volunteer basis. Members discuss safety issues they face and, with the guidance of the safety manager, develop plans for addressing each challenge.
