ADAM JONGEWARD

PE, SE, associate at DCI Engineers

Knowing early on that he wanted to be an engineer, Adam Jongeward attended a charter high school in Gresham focused on engineering and then earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree in civil engineering from the University of Illinois at and a master鈥檚 in structural engineering from Stanford University.

During his freshman year in college, Jongeward pursued an internship at DCI Engineers. The firm hired him full-time after he graduated, and he rose through the ranks to become a senior project manager and an associate.

During the past decade, Jongeward has developed expertise in mass timber construction and worked on projects such as Flatiron PDX, 38 Davis and Clay Pavilion. His work also includes higher education, commercial office and hospitality, industrial, multifamily and seismic upgrade projects. Among the many unique projects he has worked on are citizenM Hotel in LA, an 11-story hotel built from steel shipping containers fabricated in China, and the award-winning University of Oregon Student Recreation Center.

鈥淚 realized when I was little that I was not artistic, but that doesn鈥檛 mean I鈥檓 not creative. Sometimes creativity comes in the form of unique framing schemes or complex analysis, or maybe it鈥檚 an innovative interpretation of a code requirement or understanding the challenges from the rest of the players on the design team,鈥 he said. 鈥淧rojects are no longer about each person having a strictly defined role, but rather a collaborative process where my structural expertise can contribute to find architectural, mechanical or construction efficiencies.鈥

Jongeward, a member of the Council of American Structural Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers, sits on the ASCE 41 national committee, the building standard for evaluating and retrofitting existing buildings. He is on the 鈥渁nalysis鈥 and 鈥渕asonry鈥 subcommittees, particularly involved with the unreinforced masonry components.

鈥淭his is an important role as the city of Portland attempts to deal with a large number of URM buildings, both from an engineering and legislative standpoint,鈥 he noted.
