Liz Morgan has diverse interests that led to her career as a creative director. She earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree in English from Davidson University and graduated in 2008, just as the recession began, and jobs were hard to find.
Morgan decided to pursue a degree in interior design from the Parson School of Design. After gaining experience working in fashion in New York and for an architecture firm in Washington, D.C., she decided to take a road trip.
鈥淚 have a cousin who lives in Portland and I came out to visit her. I loved Portland, so I quit my job in D.C., packed my car with my belongings, and drove around the west and went camping,鈥 she said, adding she spent three months visiting several states. 鈥淚 recommend it for anyone who can take some time. It was a pretty magical experience.鈥
Morgan worked as a consultant for JHL Design for several months before joining the firm full time as a designer in 2017. She spearheaded a brand and identity change and a marketing push for national publications, helping the firm grow from three employees to nine and more than $2 million in revenue. Morgan said she appreciates the diversity of the work she is doing.
鈥淎s creative director it means I might be working on a photo shoot and filing our photographs, working on press and developing our website to managing clients and business development to schematic design for a new restaurant project and coming up with costing and materials. I love the combination of projects we do here and it keeps every part of my brain going,鈥 she said.
鈥淲e also have a really incredible team here. It鈥檚 an all-female team and there is a really wonderful energy in the office. It鈥檚 non-competitive and playful, but also very serious and creative,鈥 she added.
Morgan, who also serves as a board member for the Irvington Community Association, said it鈥檚 been satisfying to see JHL Design thrive amid Portland鈥檚 robust market, which has brought more residential and commercial work and more clients who are interested in full-package design.
