As far as Angie Helfert is concerned, the more complex a construction project is, the better. In her 12 years with Mortenson, she鈥檚 worked on massive projects that include the Fiserv Forum, a 730,000-square-foot, 17,500-seat arena that serves as the cornerstone of a new sports and entertainment district in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Now part of Mortenson鈥檚 Portland team, Helfert managed construction of the Hyatt Centric Hotel in the West End district. The 15-story hotel includes 221 guestrooms, meeting space, a restaurant and bar, and a retail/lobby entryway. For the project, Helfert paved the way for Mortenson to lead the project development to include land acquisition, entitlements, equity and financing, environmental responsibility, and design and construction.

鈥淚 like the bigger projects,鈥� she said. 鈥淲ith a bigger team there is more energy, and you鈥檝e got more resources. There鈥檚 something about the energy on a larger project that I really enjoy.鈥�

Helfert initially planned to become an architect, but she wanted to attend Marquette University and it didn鈥檛 have an architecture program so she earned her bachelor鈥檚 degree in civil engineering.

鈥淚鈥檝e always liked looking at buildings and thinking about how I would do them. I like the really tangible part where you can see the results of your work and you can see your work in progress,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 also like that it鈥檚 different all the time. You鈥檙e always in a new role or position with a new project, a different owner and working with different people.鈥�

Helfert worked in Milwaukee for 15 years and was ready for a change when Mortenson鈥檚 director of operations in that city suggested she join the company鈥檚 growing team in Portland. She brought with her a commitment to participating in community initiatives, service groups and volunteer positions that include co-leading the Women Leaders in Mortenson panel and workshop and serving as a member of the Mortenson Portland鈥檚 Women鈥檚 Affinity Group.

Helfert continues to serve as a mentor for the Marquette Mentors program and she strives to introduce young women to career opportunities.
