Steve Mileham has always been drawn to architecture because of its unique combination of art, science and math. 鈥淓arly in elementary school my parents had a second floor added onto our house, and I watched the construction closely and then drew alternate floor plans. Unfortunately, they never installed my ideas for a fire pole or a slide,鈥 he said.
He earned his bachelor鈥檚 degree from the University of Virginia and his master鈥檚 from the University of Oregon. Mileham said he enjoys the wide range of aspects involved in his work.
鈥淓very project has its own challenges, like three-dimensional puzzles, so I love solving them efficiently, creating order and designing aesthetically pleasing projects,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 find it very rewarding to research and create unique concepts for each project that will add meaning, which then forms the vocabulary of the building design.鈥
Mileham鈥檚 favorite projects include Mercedes-Benz of Wilsonville because the design showcases the vehicles and reflects their sophisticated designs. Sunset Porsche in Beaverton was challenging because of the need to create a dealership in a flood plain. He鈥檚 proud of the Hillsboro Civic Center because it was designed with 鈥渁n incredible development team that won the competition.鈥
鈥淢y favorite project, though, is the Washington County Event and Conference Center in Hillsboro, currently under construction. We have an incredible team with the contractor, the county and our LRS staff, and the process has been a lot of fun,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 had worked on many iterations of the fairgrounds master plan over 20 years, so to finally design this 90,000-square-foot event center has been a dream.鈥
Mileham noted that he feels a great sense of satisfaction to see his firm鈥檚 work manifested in the built environment, and to know all of the work and struggles that went into pulling the projects together successfully.
鈥淚t is energizing to work with our creative LRS staff and consultants, with their different perspectives, and so I am constantly learning on each project,鈥 he said. 鈥淭he opportunity to work with such interesting and successful clients and to learn about their successful businesses keeps the work fresh and inspired.鈥
