In 1990, professional engineers Chuck Harper and Tony Righellis co-founded Harper Righellis Inc., a small civil engineering firm in Portland, Oregon. Within 3 months Dan Houf joined the team, and within 3 years Ron Peterson joined as well, establishing the foundation for Harper Houf Peterson Righellis Inc.

鈥淎s we have completed successful projects over the years, our clients have been loyal to our firm and provided greater opportunity. Our growth has been fueled by repeat business,鈥� Houf said.

The firm added land surveying, structural engineering, landscape architecture, land use planning, natural resources and environmental design, and construction services over the years. Today, HHPR has 103 employees in the Portland, Salem, Bend and Vancouver, WA offices and is on track to earn $19 million in revenue this year.

鈥淥ver the years it鈥檚 been steady growth that picked up momentum and we鈥檝e grown organically with our staff. We鈥檝e hired some professionals from outside the company, but we鈥檝e also had former interns grow into leadership roles,鈥� Houf said.

As evidence of HHPR鈥檚 commitment to internal growth, two longtime staff members have been promoted to principal within the last 3 years. Ben Austin, PE, joined HHPR after graduating from college in 1999 and was promoted to principal in 2017. Bruce Haunreiter, PE, who also joined the firm in 1999, was promoted to principal earlier this year.

鈥淲e鈥檙e excited about these additions and the growth of the firm鈥� said HHPR principal Ron Peterson. 鈥淲e鈥檝e been focused on internal mentorship and we have some great people lined up to lead the firm in the future.鈥�

Among HHPR鈥檚 current projects is the design of the $28 million Clackamas Regional Center Mobility Improvements, which involve widening Sunnyside Road at the I-205 overcrossing and adding bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure around Clackamas Town Center. HHPR created a 3D model and simulated fly-through video to illustrate the project limits, and assist the public and community in visualizing the new improvements. They are also working for the City of Hillsboro on the NE Jackson School Road Improvements, which recently went out to bid. During the design phase, this large project included an extensive natural resource analysis and permitting process that HHPR facilitated with the engineering and design of the roadway and infrastructure improvements.

While public agency transportation projects make up a large portion of HHPR鈥檚 work, the multidiscipline teams deliver a wide range of projects for public and private clients, architectural firms, and developers. HHPR is a subcontractor for Bora Architects on the new Portland Public School鈥檚 Lincoln High School and recently completed the new Sideyard development with Skylab Architecture at the Burnside Bridgehead. HHPR鈥檚 diverse project portfolio includes transportation and utility projects; residential, commercial, retail, industrial, and educational projects; land use planning projects; and park designs and master plans.

ZweigWhite has recognized HHPR several times as one of its Best Firms to Work For. In 2018, it placed 13th in the national ranking in the multidiscipline category.

鈥淭his recognition reflects HHPR鈥檚 commitment to fostering a successful workplace through employee contribution,鈥� according to ZweigWhite.

In March 2018, the firm ranked seventh on the list of Portland鈥檚 20 fastest-growing engineering firms. HHPR was also ranked on the Oregon Business list of 100 Best Companies to Work For in the same month.

Houf said the firm鈥檚 business philosophy is to provide excellence service and meet its clients鈥� needs first and foremost, while fostering a culture of family among employees.

鈥淲e work hard but we also like to have fun. You spend a lot of your life working with people and it鈥檚 good to be hard-working, but we also like to have fun as a group, too,鈥� he said, adding that employees help plan entertaining activities to enjoy during lunch and after work.

HHPR, which is gold-certified with Portland鈥檚 Bureau of Planning and Sustainability for its positive impact on the environment and the community, is committed to sustaining positive impacts to our region. Through their project work, they specify innovative solutions and materials that will benefit the client and the long-term goals of the project. HHPR is also a Green Street Steward with the City of Portland and adopted the bioswale near their Portland office in Sellwood. Each quarter, colleagues remove litter, weed out noxious plants, and occasionally plant new native vegetation to maintain the health of the bioswale.

Community service is a priority for HHPR, and for the last 21 years it has held an annual Client & Charity Golf Tournament that raises money for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon and Southwest Washington. The 2019 tournament raised over $13,000. Employees also participate in community cleanups with SOLVE Oregon, and HHPR opens its office space for SOLVE to hold board meetings. In addition, HHPR sponsors sports teams for its employees鈥� children, as well as Clackamas High School鈥檚 summer baseball team, and women鈥檚 golf tournaments at Waverley Country Club.

Houf said the firm鈥檚 support for such organizations is a way of giving back to the communities that have made HHPR a success over the last three decades.
