McKinstry got its start in Bellevue, Wash., as a plumbing and piping contractor before expanding to Portland in 1969. Today, it is a full-service, design-build-operate-and-maintain (DBOM) firm specializing in high-performing buildings.

With nearly 2,000 professional staff and tradespeople throughout the United States and operations in more than 15 states, McKinstry鈥檚 construction energy retrofit and mobile service portfolio includes commercial, health care, government, K-12 and higher education, science and technology, civic, industrial, hospitality, and retail and restaurant projects. It recently launched a renewables offering to expand its ability to drive efficiency into the built environment.

Damon Cannon, business unit manager of McKinstry鈥檚 Portland office, said the company has about 300 employees in Oregon and is on track to perform more than $100 million in revenue out of its Portland office.

The key to the company鈥檚 success, he noted, is the four core values at the center of its corporate culture. The first value is to put people first, from employees and vendors to clients, and to ensure that all of its employees go home safely at the end of each day.

鈥淭he second is to build trusted partnerships,鈥� Cannon said. 鈥淲e really do look at our customers as lifetime partners and not transactional customers.鈥�

One longtime client, the University of Portland, has partnered with McKinstry to systematically improve its energy use and costs by upgrading energy performance and lighting in its residence halls, classroom buildings and other facilities.

鈥淚t鈥檚 been a great partnership and our energy team is passionate about helping clients realize their sustainability goals,鈥� Cannon said.

McKinstry鈥檚 third value is to be 鈥渃onstantly curious,鈥� encouraging the search for innovation and ways to operate more efficiently and with less harm to the environment. A reflection of that is its involvement in the modernization of the Edith Green-Wendell Wyatt Federal Building, a LEED Platinum project that Cannon said highlights many of the company鈥檚 specialties, from HVAC and plumbing systems to fire protection.

鈥淚t鈥檚 one of those iconic jobs that really stands out when you are downtown,鈥� he said. 鈥淎t the end of the day it uses between 60 and 65 percent less energy than a comparable building size wise.鈥�

The fourth value is to make a positive difference in the communities around McKinstry鈥檚 offices. 鈥淲e want to better the lives of others in the community, it鈥檚 in our DNA as a company,鈥� Cannon said, adding its Building Good platform enables employees to volunteer in their communities.

Last year, McKinstry鈥檚 Oregon employees volunteered about 500 hours, all on company time, to deliver for Meals on Wheels, package food with the Oregon Food Bank, support early literacy with The Children鈥檚 Book Bank and many other community organizations. The Columbia Slough Watershed Council presented its 2019 Leadership Award to the company, and McKinstry鈥檚 foundation awarded $5,000 in grants for scholarships and community donations.

鈥淚t鈥檚 cool to see the employees get out and engage, and I firmly believe we get more out of it as a company than the groups we help because of the camaraderie,鈥� Cannon said.
