Mackenzie is a design firm for the built environment, this year celebrating their 60th anniversary. As the firm continues to evolve, they鈥檙e looking forward to designing the next 60 years together with their clients.

鈥淲e鈥檙e proud to have reached this milestone,鈥� says Mackenzie President Rich Mitchell. 鈥淭here is the prescriptive approach to design and engineering, complying with regulations and codes. Then there is the forward-thinking Mackenzie approach that optimizes the use of natural resources, minimizes environmental impacts and integrates advancing technologies to create designs well suited for the next 60 years.鈥�

Tom Mackenzie founded the firm in 1960, offering structural engineering. Encouraged by clients after several years of successful practice, Tom expanded services to include architecture. Out of this emerged a talented, ambitious architect, Rick Saito, which resulted in a partnership in 1977. In the mid-90s, Mackenzie/ Saito & Associates became Group Mackenzie, with Jeff Reaves serving as a third president under the new name. The name reflected the more holistic service offerings and integrated partnership approach. Rich Mitchell was one of the firm鈥檚 senior principals and later assumed the role of Managing Principal and President in 2008, and by 2013, the firm became simply Mackenzie.

Now with specialized services across a range of disciplines, including architecture, interior design, structural, civil and traffic engineering, land use and transportation planning, and landscape architecture, Mackenzie鈥檚 integrated design approach navigates the entirety of a project.

鈥淲e鈥檙e a team dedicated to continual innovation in the industry,鈥� says Mackenzie Principal and Architect, Terry Krause. 鈥淕reat design is beautiful, simple and responsive, and while the tools and technology to achieve it may evolve, the talent and thought behind it are imagined by people.鈥�

Mackenzie has more than 200 employees, with headquarters in Portland and offices in Vancouver and Seattle. Above all, the firm takes great pride in its people. Through programs like Mackenzie University 鈥� a formalized training curriculum open to all staff 鈥� and Construction & Design Entrepreneurs 鈥� a nonprofit that works to promote the economic development of ethnic minorities, women and small businesses 鈥� mentoring is an integral factor for growth.

鈥淭he majority of our staff has been here for more than a decade, growing into new roles and attaining deeper levels of experience,鈥� says Josh McDowell, Mackenzie Principal and Director of Structural Engineering. 鈥淲e have worked with so many great partners to create projects that we can all be proud of.鈥�

As Mackenzie moves into a new decade, they鈥檙e also continuing a legacy of designing successful projects that contribute to economic vitality, environmental livability and inclusive diversity in the community, considering the built environment鈥檚 impact on society and the stewardship of the planet鈥檚 resources.
