With roots stemming from Sivers Construction in 1956, Perlo Construction has steadily grown over the years to become what it is today.

The general contractor is rooted in relationships, starting with a friendship that began at Oregon State University more than 30 years ago. Jeff Perala and Gayland Looney were classmates in OSU鈥檚 Construction Engineering Management Program during the 1980s when they met.

After graduating, Perala joined a company called WL McCormack & Co. and Looney joined him five years later, when the company was called McCormack Pacific. Their expertise complemented each other, as Perala enjoyed the pre-construction process and Looney gravitated to the construction management.

In 1995, Perala and Looney were promoted to vice president positions. The company grew to $25 million and the pair were invited to become partners. To mark the transition, they combined the first parts of their last names to create Perlo, which was added to the company name. In 2010, after surpassing the $100 million milestone, the company dropped 鈥淢cCormack鈥� and simply became Perlo.

Now in its 65th year in business, Perlo is recognized as one of the best companies to work for, has won many top project awards and is consistently ranked as one of the fastest growing 100 private companies.

Last year, Perlo hit overall revenue of $320 million and now has 300 employees. The company has a solid presence in a variety of markets, including healthcare, education, industrial, warehouse, self-storage, food processing, auto dealerships and retail, with 95 percent of its work coming from repeat clients. Moving forward, Perlo is excited for continued growth and an emphasis on client satisfaction.

Recent projects include the new Marrion Elementary School in Vancouver, Wash., the remodel of Mahlum鈥檚 office space, which achieved the first Living Building certification in Portland, and the Portland Meadows redevelopment, winner of the 2021 CAB/NAIOP/SIOR Night of Excellence in Real Estate Industrial Development of the Year award.

To ensure the company always keeps its 鈥渂ig little company鈥� feel, Perlo leadership has put an emphasis on living and breathing 鈥渢he Perlo Way,鈥� practices that focus on working hard, taking care of people and always doing what鈥檚 right. At the same time, the company will continue to explore new technologies to keep Perlo at the forefront of the industry.

Perlo鈥檚 team has donated more than 600 volunteer hours through its internal organization called 鈥淧erlo Cares.鈥� The organizations it supports include Meals on Wheels, Angels in the Outfield, the Children鈥檚 Cancer Network, Parrot Creek Child and Family Services, Portland YouthBuilders, ACE Academy, SOLVE and Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District.
