Location: Vancouver, WashingtonThe WSDOT I-5 SB Interstate Bridge to NE 78th Traffic Management Project in Vancouver, Washington, was designed to alleviate rush hour congestion near the bridge and ensure safe commuting during the most congested times.
ATM tools help reduce variability in travel times by promoting uniform driver behavior, resulting in a consistent and predictable trip time for people and goods. These components allow WSDOT to quickly alert drivers to changing roadway conditions and direct drivers to reduce speeds in heavy congestion or inclement weather, or move away from a lane closure, thereby enhancing the safety of the corridor.
The project involved furnishing and installing six ramp metering systems; one mono-tube sign bridge; seven bridge-mounted sign brackets; 28 VMS; illumination; an Intelligent Transportation System; permanent signage; bridge pedestrian fencing; erosion control; and traffic control. It is the largest electrical prime contract to come out from WSDOT in the Southwest Washington region’s history.
The complexity of the project required much of the work to be performed at night in an effort to reduce impacts to the traveling public. The team worked with WSDOT to manage substantial impacts well in advance to allow the public time to make adjustments or plan ahead for delays.
