Southwestern Oregon Community College’s (SWOCC) Umpqua Hall Health & Science Building will serve the community’s urgent need for healthcare professionals. The renovation and addition provide 36,200 square feet to encompass a range of health and science facility needs.

The renovation was designed to support the nursing and EMT programs, while the addition provides expanded space for science labs, chemistry learning spaces, biology, physics and geology courses. These state-of-the-art learning spaces will help SWOCC attract new faculty and engage students through technology-rich simulation labs and classrooms.

Umpqua Hall sets a new standard for innovative, locally sourced materials in its use of Oregon cross-laminated timber (CLT), which provides a warm finish without ceilings. The once-dark and neglected existing facility will feature a daylit stairway and core with three generous skylights. Floor openings connect spaces vertically, allowing for natural light to flood classrooms, corridors and offices below.

The building is set to perform 70 percent better than contemporary buildings of similar scale and use. It is passively heated and ventilated using an efficient and comfortable radiant floor system. Windows connect to the building’s control system, and are set to ventilate the space when necessary and flush the building during the night.
