Portland Community College created the Oregon Manufacturing Innovation Center (OMIC) to provide an apprentice-based, manufacturing training program in response to community needs. Many are aware of the region’s critical shortage of skilled workers, and this new facility and its programs will strengthen the workforce pipeline and provide high-paying careers to those in the community.

The 32,245-square-foot facility will primarily serve PCC students and offer opportunities for K-12 to PhD students. OMIC was designed as a catalyst to enhance the competitiveness of the metal manufacturing industry, serving companies of all sizes through an industry-driven collaborative.

OMIC received LEED v4 BD+C (New Construction) and LEED Silver certification. Since the facility is located on a greenfield site, achieving this certification relied heavily on energy and water reduction strategies. The building is designed to achieve approximately 22 percent energy savings over baseline and a 40 percent reduction in domestic water usage.

Strategic detailing of the unique envelope system, optimizing natural daylight and energy-efficient fixtures, in conjunction with a rooftop solar panel array, helped the 100 percent electric project meet lofty energy-reduction goals.

As Columbia County’s first technical college, PCC OMIC will reduce the environmental impact while providing equal opportunities for the diverse local community.
