Location: BeavertonThe Beaverton Public Safety Center was designed to be the community resource epicenter during an emergency. It is earthquake resistant and built to higher-than-standard seismic resiliency, allowing it to remain fully operational and provide emergency services to the community during a major earthquake or disaster.
Also the new home of the Beaverton Police and Emergency Management Departments, the 72,000-square-foot, three-story building features a structural steel frame with 61,000 cubic feet of cross-laminated timber (CLT) flooring and roof panels.
The new facility has 873 solar panels on the roof that generate 331,800 kilowatts of power annually. Its microgrid energy management system allows the building to be functional during widespread power outages for a prolonged period. When the building is not using the solar energy produced, the energy is stored in the battery system that PGE can use to supply clean energy back into the power grid.
In order to keep the project moving at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Skanska utilized a Smartlift robot to install glass that is controlled by one person and allowed for social distancing. Skanska has since used this method on other jobsites to reduce heavy lifting and the risk of injuries or accidents.
