Kado NW houses 196 dwelling units and contains 220,000 square feet of apartments, amenities, ground-level retail and resident parking. The seven-story building, located at Northwest 18th Avenue and Pettygrove Street, features crafted exterior details such as metal trim tracery. Unique raked brick detailing adorns the facades, while at street level retail entrances framed in Red Balau wood punctuate expansive storefront glazing.

Within the lobby, a fireplace adds a sense of warmth while full-height glazing provides visual transparency towards a wood-wrapped porch. The building’s design attempts to ground it contextually with a rich palette of forms and quality, long-lasting materials.

Along the east side of the block is the maker space, a versatile workshop equipped to handle a variety of DIY tasks. Additional amenities include a community kitchen, lounge space and a library that open to a landscaped patio and BBQ area.

The larger, three-quarter block size of the project, along with its height, created challenges, particularly related to the overall building mass and scale. The design of the building, with its shifting masses at the corners, provides a formal exuberance and breaks down the overall scale of the project. Orie windows, commonly found throughout Northwest Portland, give rhythm to the mid-block façade.
