Project Gutenberg included a new, single-story structural steel frame facility with an attached three-story production facility of 113,245 square feet. Genentech, a biotechnology company, initially built a 296,000-square-foot fill and finish facility in 2009. The distribution center, located near the existing facility, expands Genentech’s ability to manufacture and provide pharmaceuticals from its 75-acre, five-building Hillsboro campus.

McKinstry initially was contracted to provide plumbing and HVAC wet and dry services. Due to scheduling issues, it later was hired for plumbing design as well as installation of all components for hanging a ceiling grid in the AES cleanroom.

The scope also involved providing large ductwork on both roofs and multiple AHUs and HRUs. For piping, complex pipe rack systems were used along with lab gas and RO systems. Due to design needs, sloped pipe was necessary in various systems.

One of the main challenges of this project was the continuously evolving design, which required a high level of coordination and collaboration between trade partners. The project brought together companies from across the area which utilized local suppliers, making Project Gutenberg a significant contributor to the overall community and a creator for inclusion.
