The Gideon Street Overcrossing is a bicycle and pedestrian bridge that restored an important connection in Southeast Portland鈥檚 Hosford-Abernethy neighborhood that was eliminated by the TriMet MAX Orange Line alignment.

The project involved the erection of a 142-foot structural steel span, weighing 100,000 pounds, which stretches over three sets of light rail tracks and two sets of freight tracks in a single span. Work also included erecting four prefabricated weathering steel towers, two weathering steel stairways, tower curtainwall glazing and two custom elevators.

With the south towers located in a heavily used bike corridor, crews and flaggers were required to constantly monitor equipment moves to ensure the safety of cyclists. The site also was made more difficult by the nearby overhead power lines and the light rail overhead catenary wires. Compounding the project鈥檚 complexity was the proximity of a fire station, which required access at all times.

The project team also had to develop a structure erection plan that posed minimal impacts to the freight and transit corridor. To that end, the team decided to 鈥渇ly鈥 the main bridge span in as a single span during a two-hour nighttime shutdown of rail traffic.
