John E. McAmis

John E. McAmis served two tours in Vietnam, one in the U.S. Army and the other as a Navy Seabee. After returning from Vietnam, he attended Butte College where he was the first student body president. He went on to attend Colorado State University.

McAmis has mentored many in the business, most notably his son, John C. McAmis, and his nephew Scott Vandegrift, who represent the company鈥檚 next generation of leadership.

鈥淛ohn saw early on the importance of self-reliance and has vertically integrated many aspects of J.E. McAmis Inc. to ensure our competitiveness,鈥� Vandegrift said, adding McAmis had the foresight to make strategic investments in permitting and developing quarries throughout Oregon and Washington specifically in anticipation of jetty work.

Along with many large and small heavy civil, marine and environmental projects performed throughout California, Alaska and Florida, McAmis has guided his company to play critical roles in significant projects in the Pacific Northwest such as the expansion and development of the Columbia River, including two major deepening projects for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and three jetty projects at the Columbia River鈥檚 mouth.

Since 2010, J.E. McAmis has been a prime contractor on more than $300 million worth of federal projects in the Columbia River basin. These have also included capital and maintenance dredging, marine drilling and blasting, jetty rehabilitation and dam/spillway work at Bonneville Dam, John Day Dam and The Dalles Dam.

McAmis and his wife, Renee, sponsor a scholarship for veterans at Butte College, and are contributors to the Gateway Science Museum, Enloe Hospital, the Children鈥檚 Home Society and several other local charities. Over the years he has also provided various support in the form of money, equipment and manpower to Search and Rescue, the Columbia River Maritime Museum, Boy Scouts of America, Fourth of July celebrations and other community events.

鈥淥f all John鈥檚 accomplishments, his family is, by far, number one,鈥� Vandegrift said, noting the McAmis鈥� have three children and four grandchildren.
