Founded five decades ago, TriMet has played a key role in the growth of Portland and its surrounding area. To meet the growing transportation needs of Oregonians, TriMet has expanded its vital services significantly over the years, yet the TriMet Powell Garage – built 45 years ago as a temporary facility – remained mostly unchanged. Constructing a new bus maintenance facility was needed to improve safety and increase capacity.

This four-year project included a phased rebuild of the entire 17-acre site, while maintaining uninterrupted public transit service. The first phase included building a 24,000-square-foot, three-bay fuel and wash building that featured a bus wash system that recycles up to 300 gallons of water a minute.

The second phase involved expanding the original bus maintenance area to include 22 maintenance bays and a 400,000-square-foot concrete bus yard that can accommodate more than 300 buses. To support the increase of new electric-powered buses and to provide charging stations for them, electrical service enhancements and structural upgrades were required in the bus storage and maintenance area. The second story of this building augmented office space and added more amenities, including a training room, roof-top patio, bigger employee break room, a new fitness center, and the addition of more than 200 parking spaces.

The larger space – along with its focus on sustainability and efficiency – will serve the community for decades to come. In total, the project will accommodate 50 percent more buses, including larger buses that align with TriMet’s initiative of having a 100 percent zero-emission fleet of electric buses by 2040.
