The Nike name is synonymous with innovation and one of its newest struc-tures – the Serena Williams Building – demonstrates the company’s commitment to community, sustainability and one-of-a-kind designs. The 1,000,000-square-foot project – which took a total of five years from beginning to end – is a workplace for 2,500 occupants. It is the largest building at Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton. The building houses Nike’s Consumer Creation team: design teams, consumer insight teams, women’s, men’s and children’s teams, and apparel and footwear product merchandising teams.

The LEED-platinum certified structure has four key components: an underground parking garage and loading dock; integrated design studios; a 12-story tower with shared campus amenities; and a merchandising center for prototyping retail spaces. The Serena Williams building is the first of its kind for Nike, allowing products to move through all stages of the lifecycle in one building – sketch, prototype, final design, to retail fixture.

Informal outdoor spaces are scattered throughout the area to foster community building amongst occupants and to promote unity with nature, including courtyard gardens, plazas and a sunken tennis court. Inside, people can enjoy the aesthetics of exposed concrete, skylights, views of the wetland from workspaces, and five food and beverage venues.

Designers for each Nike brand are on a single level, while services stack vertically between levels. To further conserve Earth’s resources, the building design incorporates several environmentally friendly features. Stormwater is collected and re-distributed to the area’s surrounding wetland, 260 kw photovoltaic panels are found along the building’s roofs, and rainwater is reused for toilet flushing.

And, as the building name suggests, the life story and career accomplishments of Serena Williams are displayed throughout the various studios.
