This year-and-a-half-long project that spans 56,000 square feet is evidence of On Running’s commitment to innovation, cutting edge design and global collaboration. The state-of-the-art facility is the company’s first headquarters outside of Europe and is in the heart of Portland’s Pearl District.

The dramatic building uniquely blends European sensibility with the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Locally sourced materials were used as much as possible, such as the Oregon Maple that enhances several conference room interiors. There is also nearly a mile of stunning 3M Blaze film, overlayed by chrome-plated steel grates. The result: a fascinating hallway that mimics a kaleidoscope of changing colors.

A custom mirrored glass pivot door with handmade hinges welcomes visitors after exiting the elevator. A central gathering space also was added, boasting an 18-foot-wide video wall that can be used for global meetings or events, or as a window to the Switzerland headquarters.

The project also features a monolithic half plate steel staircase that required moving 4.5-ton steel plates through a fourth-floor window. Once inside, they were installed within a post tension slab with 1/8-inch tolerances. As you journey upward on this showstopping stairway, your senses are awakened with a dramatic 3D light sculpture that depicts the Wildwood Trail.

Combining On Running Headquarters’ retail experience into its workplace design was also a priority. On the fifth floor of the building, a spacious area was added to host retail buyers and to facilitate sales presentations.
On Running’s new Portland headquarters provides an influx of 400 jobs into the local economy and will allow for further footprint expansion across the United States. While coordinating project details across countries proved to be a challenge, the finished building is a true testament to modern architecture.
